We are deeply committed to sustainable development because we know that by improving lives in small but meaningful ways day after day, we fulfill our purpose and sustain our growth now and for generations to come.
We see sustainable development as an opportunity. Firstly, it is an opportunity for efficiency. Today, almost 96% of all the materials that enter P&G plants leave as finished product. More than half of remaining materials are recycled.
It is also an opportunity for innovation. P&G recently launched Ariel Cool Clean in the UK, Ariel Actif a Froid in France, Dash Cool Clean in Italy. This new laundry detergent delivers washing performance and energy savings and environmental improvement too. This is important as washing clothes is one of the most energy intensive activities in the home.
P&G scientists were also behind the development of PUR - a drinking water treatment product that has delivered the equivalent of more than 760 million litres of safe drinking water into disaster relief situations and developing markets. We announced a new commitment to provide 2 billion litres of safe drinking water by 2012.
Our sustainability efforts have been recognised externally. P&G continues to be a leading member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. We have maintained our membership of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since it was first developed in 1999. We have also received the Gold SABRE award in Spain for the “Every Drop Counts” Ariel campaign that encourages consumers to change their habits and save water while washing their clothes and keeping the house clean. We are encouraged by this but we do recognise the potential that remains.
